Tañ — Artist Mix 009
Your sound sits somewhere between deep, percussive and bass-driven club music. How would you describe the palette you were working with for this mix?
I tried to keep an open mind when selecting tracks for this mix. I wanted it to be on the heavier, darker side but with plenty of textures throughout. I had so much fun piecing it all together as I think it’s important to try and keep the flow throughout that ties all the different genres together. One to stick on at the pres.
Are there any artists or scenes that influenced this mix?
Recently I’ve been listening to mixes from Angel D’lite, OK Williams, Quest and DJ Swisha. They always bring the energy! And I love that they all bring an interesting blend of styles into the mix so seamlessly.
This mix lands around Waterworks’ first bass-focused Sunday. What does “bass music” mean to you right now?
Bass music is so broad but to me it often feels like it encompasses music that tends to have influences from black music whether that’s sound system culture, Jungle or Dubstep.
Do you feel like bass music is having a shift or resurgence in the UK at the moment?
There is a lot of interesting and more experimental bass music coming out at the moment. It feels like we’re moving away from the endless edits (which don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy!) but I’m liking listening to more stripped back tracks that have more space, or tracks with different styles of percussion.
You’ve been closely connected to EC2A. How has that environment shaped your sound or approach to DJing?
I’ve been a big supporter of EC2A since the early days, it feels like family. At that time I was playing a lot more UKG but it’s been nice to keep referring back to the label as it evolves and so does my own sound.
What does EC2A represent to you beyond just a label or collective?
It’s so nice to see a label really pushing something with an ethos founded in underground music culture and championing up-and-coming artists. Even beyond the music, the clothes and the artwork are always so creative. I also think the way the label pays homage to the originators is key. There’s a natural crossover between EC2A and Waterworks. How does your sound appeal and connect the two worlds?
Hopefully I bring a good combination of the festival vibes that get you off your feet, a sprinkling of (EC2A approved) bangers and tasteful blends. I’m looking forward to returning to Waterworks – all the stages were such a nice size that made you feel really connected with the crowd / DJ.If someone’s hearing you for the first time through this mix, what do you hope sticks with them?
I just hope they enjoy it as much as I did while I was mixing it. But also, to look for inspiration in many different places, you never know what you might find.
