Jorg Kuning — Artist Mix 007
A slow-building current that draws you inward, then sweeps you away. Jorg traces the fluid line between tension and release, stitching together deep percussion, dubwise textures, and submerged melodies that shimmer just beneath the surface. This is sound designed to move like water: patient, powerful, and impossible to pin down.
You’ve put out some wonderfully textural, unpredictable music—how do you keep challenging yourself as a producer and DJ?
Thankyou, Im always on the lookout for different ways of creating interesting sounds because i love listening to them and if i can make them myself then even better! the challenge is to have enough time to explore them all.
What’s the most unconventional sound or sample you’ve ever used in a track, and how did it make the final cut?
I tend to synthesise most of my sounds, so i guess the most conventional sounds are the pulse/sawtooth wave based sounds which contain very pure harmonic relationships, and then on the other side are the sounds made with more complex harmonic spectrums, but these can be also be used to make very conventional sounding drums/cymbals so its not always cut and dry. And the way your classic waves are played and modulated can make them unconventional. Bit of a non-answer there ! Sounds make the final cut if they work in the context of a track and sound good to my ears, conventions change over the years so best not to chase them or run away from them too much.
Were there any artists from past Waterworks lineups that influenced your own sonic identity or this mix specifically
Mala is someone on the lineup who has been influential to me. One of my favourite tracks of his is left leg out, dark twisted housey end of dubstep is something i like alot. Id say that kinda blend of stuff is running thru the mix ive done too.
What’s one sound or style you haven’t explored yet but are itching to dive into?
Im not sure about sounds/styles but ive been making music at a similar tempo for quite a while and could do with breaking out of that a bit. My good friends and label crew Bitzer Maloney, schuttle and Herc Morse are experts in the sub 110bpm range and I keep meaning to make more stuff down there for them to play, always end up speeding things up tho.
Your music often skirts the edges of minimal, but it’s rarely purist. What draws you to the genre, and where do you like to bend its rules?
Tbh i dont know much about minimal or what its rules are, which i guess is why im not a purist. i can see why people associate my music with the term, i like a short decay time on my drums perhaps more than your average person. But i dont think the music itself is minimal in the literal sense, and its not something im thinking about while making music. It comes out how it does through lots of unconscious decisions and the occasional conscious one if im feeling clever.
Were there particular records, labels, or artists that shaped your relationship with minimal early on?
My relationship with minimal is probably condensable to Ricardo Villalobos, Isolee and the wider freerotation / mindtours axis. All of which have been very inspiring to me over the years but i wouldn't want to reduce them all to the term. They all make and play dynamic, expressive, mind-bending music that can be deeply moving and make you wanna move your body in different ways and that's what I love about them.
